When Sunday September 3rd rolls around Aussie’s and Kiwi’s alike will be celebrating our dads for Father’s Day. We all know what we’re celebrating on Father's Day but what else do you know about this day? Here are some facts about Father’s Day and Dad’s you might not know:
1. Unlike Australia & New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, France and Singapore (and many other countries) celebrate dear old dad on the third Sunday in June.
2. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington, USA on 19th June, 1910.
3. Father’s Day started in the USA when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington planned a day to honour Father’s. She was inspired by the first Mother’s Day which was celebrated in 1908.
4. Thailand celebrate Father’s Day on the 5th of December, which is the birthday of their King.
5. There are 4.6 million Father’s in Australia according to social researchers, mccrindle
6. Approximately 144,000 Father’s in Australia are ‘House hubbies’, dads who stay at home to look after their kids.
7. According to Hallmark, 50% of all Father’s Day cards are purchased for dads. 20% are purchased for husbands.
8. In the Seahorse world, the Father gives birth to the babies. The female deposits her eggs into the male’s pouch, which he then fertilizes.
9. Germany celebrates Father’s Day on Ascension Day, held 40 days after Easter which, marks the day Jesus ascended to Heaven, according to Christian beliefs.
10. The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day.
