Pink granite peaks, water the colour of a postcard, and a beach that keeps ending up on 'best in the world' lists. Freycinet National Park and Tasmania's East Coast are the kind of place you plan a whole trip around. There's a lot packed into this stretch of coastline. You can paddle the sheltered bays, cruise out to Wineglass Bay, or lace up for one of the walks that made this peninsula famous. Whatever you're after, it's a day you'll be talking about long after you've left. Here are some of the best things to do in Freycinet and on the East Coast.
Tasmania's East Coast runs from the white sand of the Bay of Fires down through Bicheno and Coles Bay to the Freycinet Peninsula. It's home to Wineglass Bay, the Hazards mountain range, and some of the clearest water in the country. Whether you're here for the day or building a proper East Coast Tasmania road trip, there's plenty to fill your itinerary. Have a look through our range of Freycinet and East Coast experiences to see what's on.
The view from the Wineglass Bay lookout is worth the climb, but seeing it from sea level is something else entirely. A Wineglass Bay Cruise with Lunch in the Vista Lounge takes you around the peninsula's granite cliffs and into the bay itself, with a spot to sit back and take it all in. It's one of the easiest ways to reach parts of the coastline you can't get to on foot. Browse more cruises to plan the rest of your trip.
Freycinet's calm, protected waters were made for kayaking. A Guided Kayak Tour in Freycinet National Park glides you past secluded beaches and hidden inlets, with a guide pointing out the wildlife and the stories along the way. Great for first timers and regulars alike. If paddling's your thing, there's more where that came from in our kayaking and canoeing range.
Some places you rush. Freycinet isn't one of them. The 4 Day Freycinet Peninsula Walk with Accommodation & Meals takes you deep into the park on foot, covering the beaches, bays and ridgelines at a pace that lets you actually notice them. Meals and a bed are sorted, so all you carry is a day pack. Find more trips like it in our bushwalking and hiking tours.
The East Coast rewards the people who linger. A 2 Night Coastal Getaway with Breakfast & Bubbles gives you a base to explore from, plus a reason to slow down at the end of the day. Perfect for a birthday, an anniversary, or no occasion at all. Discover more in our Tasmania getaways.
If you're gifting and you're not sure which one they'd love most, a RedBalloon Gift Card lets them pick their own East Coast moment. No wrong answers.
Once you've ticked off Freycinet and the East Coast, the rest of the state is waiting. Head south for a harbour city break with things to do in Hobart, go north to Launceston, venture west to Cradle Mountain, or catch the ferry across to Bruny Island. See everything on offer across Tasmania.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you swim at Wineglass Bay?
Yes. Wineglass Bay has calm, clear water and a long stretch of white sand, so it's a popular spot for a swim on a warm day. The water stays cool year-round given it is Tasmania, so most people find summer the most comfortable time to take a dip. You'll need to walk in, as there's no road access to the beach itself.
How long is the Wineglass Bay hike?
The walk to the Wineglass Bay lookout takes around 45 minutes to an hour each way and involves a steady climb up a set of stone steps. If you want to continue down to the beach, allow around 2.5 to 3 hours return for the full walk. For a longer day on the trails, the Freycinet National Park Flexible Hiking Tour covers more of the park with a guide.
How do you get to the Wineglass Bay lookout?
The lookout is reached on foot from the main car park at the end of Freycinet Drive, past Coles Bay. It's a well-marked uphill trail of stone steps. There's no vehicle access, so comfortable shoes and water are a good idea, especially in summer.
Are there boat tours in Freycinet?
Yes. Boat and cruise tours are one of the best ways to see the peninsula's coastline and get into Wineglass Bay from the water. The Wineglass Bay Cruise with Lunch and Drinks in the Sky Lounge takes you around the granite cliffs and sea caves with an elevated viewing deck.
What wildlife can you see on the East Coast of Tasmania?
The region is home to wallabies, echidnas, dolphins, seals and a huge range of birdlife. Between roughly May and July you may spot migrating whales off the coast, and the waters around Freycinet are known for their marine life on cruises and paddling tours.
When is the best time to visit Freycinet and the East Coast? Summer, from December to February, brings the warmest weather and the best swimming conditions, though it's also the busiest. Spring and autumn are quieter with mild days that suit hiking. A Luxury Romantic Glamping Getaway with a Sauna Session is a lovely way to enjoy the region in the cooler shoulder months.
