A rally driving experience puts you in a turbocharged car on a rally track, with an instructor coaching you through the first laps. You get a briefing, a helmet and a few laps to find the limit, then a professional takes the wheel for a hot lap. There are options for first-timers and for anyone who wants a half day behind the wheel.
Some of the cars on offer are real rally cars used in the Australian Championships, and you drive them yourself. Packages run from three hot laps as a passenger to a half day with at least 28 laps. In Queensland and Perth, you can swap the rally car for a V8 buggy or an off-road Can-Am. Pick the city, then decide how many laps you want.
The Rally Drive and Hot Lap gives you seven laps in a Subaru WRX, a helmet, race suit and intercom, then a hot lap with a professional driver. The Rally Driving 8 Laps, 1 Hot Lap Experience uses a champion-spec turbo Subaru STI, Mitsubishi or Toyota 86 and caters for auto-only drivers. In the Hunter Valley, the Rally Drive 4 Intro Laps, 8 Laps, 1 Hot Lap puts a WRX or Lancer Evo under you with a real race driver as your instructor.
Brisbane's Subaru WRX Rally Car and V8 Buggy Drive splits your laps between the two, with a hot lap in each and in-car coaching from a pro. On the Gold Coast, the V8 Buggy Drive is a 20-lap drive that teaches control, drifting and racing, and gets you sideways and airborne. The Turbo Race Buggy is the shorter version, with eight laps and a pro in the passenger seat for one.
Perth adds off-road Can-Am options to the rally cars. The Can-Am Maverick X3 Extreme gives you eight drive laps in the Can-Am, then a hot lap driven by a professional. For the rally car, the Rally Driving 32 Laps, 2 Hot Laps is a half day of at least four separate driving sessions, and you choose the car on the day.
The Melbourne 32-lap half day offers a choice of Subaru STI, Mitsubishi Evo and Toyota 86, with at least 28 laps and two hot laps. For two cars in a shorter session, try the Rally Drive 2 Cars, 16 Laps, 1 Hot Lap. The WRX 6 Drive Laps and 1 V8 Buggy Hot Lap swaps the last lap for a hot lap in a V8 buggy.
The Rally Drive 2 Cars, 16 Laps, 1 Hot Lap Experience swaps you between two turbo rally cars, with a qualified instructor and a hot lap in the passenger seat. Prefer to ride? The Rally Driving 3 Professional Driver Hot Laps has three laps with the pro doing the work.
Give the speed lover in your life a turbocharged car, a helmet and a hot lap with a professional, and you've handed them a story for the next few months. The three-hot-lap options suit someone who'd rather ride than drive.
Not sure about the city or the car? A RedBalloon gift voucher lets them choose the track and the date.
A rally driving experience lets you drive a turbocharged rally car around a purpose-built track after a drivers' briefing, then ride in the passenger seat for a hot lap with a professional. Cars include the Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo and Toyota 86, depending on the location. The Rally Drive and Hot Lap in Sydney is a popular option for a first go.
You can book a rally driving experience in Sydney, the Hunter Valley, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide. Perth adds Can-Am off-road options, and Queensland adds V8 and turbo buggies. The Can-Am Maverick X3 Extreme in Perth is one of the Perth options.
It depends on the product. The Can-Am Perth options state that no licence is required, while the Perth two-car rally drive asks for at least a provisional licence and the Melbourne half day asks for proficiency with a manual. Auto-only drivers are catered for on the Sydney 8-lap rally drive, and passenger hot laps need no driving experience.
Minimum ages run from 12 on the Can-Am and Queensland buggy options to 16 or 17 on the rally car drives, and each product page lists its own. Weight caps range from 130kg on the rally cars to 140kg on the Can-Am and Brisbane options and 150kg on the Brisbane six-lap WRX drive.
Drive packages include a drivers' briefing, instruction and a helmet. Several add a race suit and intercom, as on the Sydney seven-lap drive, and Brisbane's WRX and V8 buggy day adds refreshments. Most packages include a hot lap with a professional driver.
Yes. The Adelaide three hot lap option has a professional driver take you around the track for three laps, and no driving experience is needed. Weight limits still apply, so check the product page, and Perth and Melbourne have matching three-hot-lap options.
Rally experiences here use real turbocharged rally cars on an off-road track, with laps you drive yourself and hot laps driven by a professional. For single-seater style racing, the F1-style driving page covers that format.
If you want more speed, the V8 supercar experiences put you in a V8 supercar, and drifting is a different way to get a car sideways. Off-road racing covers the buggy side of things, and the exotic supercar experiences are there for anyone chasing something louder.
