Learn all about Australian opals and experience the thrill of releasing the fire within the stone in this hands-on workshop. Choose a parcel of three genuine Australian opals, each weighing 6-12ct, and then try your hand at polishing them to a high shine under the guidance of a lapidary.

Learn all about opals, where they're found, how to value them, the folklore and myths around this magic stone. Located in beautiful wine country of Gulgong, this 2-3 hour workshop kicks off with a short introduction to opals that will help you know what to look for when it comes time to selecting your gemstones. Each participant gets to choose a parcel of three genuine Australian opals, each weighing 6-12ct. Then, under the guidance of a lapidary, learn how to polish them to a high shine and how to release the gorgeous fire within the stones. At the end of the session, you will leave with three magnificent and unique opals placed into a small commemorative display case. The perfect activity for a rainy day or if you just need a break from wine tasting.

Session Length

This workshop is approximately 2 hours in duration
Available daily at 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm

Guidelines

Not suitable for children under the age of 12
Children under 15 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult
Currently classes are only offered in English and Dutch

Cancellation

Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Numbers on the Day

We are still be taking up to four people per workshop but everyone must be from the same family bubble, so even if only one person books, all other bookings for that workshop will be closed. So please, if you want to book a workshop but you can see a space or two is already taken, please book for another day. We hope to see you soon for this super popular workshop. This workshop runs with a maximum of four participants.

Dress Code

Although polishing opal is a very safe pastime, it does involve fast spinning abrasive discs so loose clothing should be avoided and long hair tied back.

Was an amazing workshop run by a very knowledgeable gentleman with an incredible passion for what he's does. Very warm ,friendly and supportive environment to learn how to polish opals. Would very highly recommend to anyone looking for something a little different and also challenging but the results can be breathtaking.

My partner and I absolutely loved our experience. Sonya was so passionate and knowledgable, which really helped both of us learn and have a great time. I actually found it really relaxing and would do it again. There's something about focusing and polishing the opals that is very meditative.

Really loved the experience and the couple running the workshop were very friendly with a great knowledge of opals. Really poor communication from red balloon as our booking was not communicated to the workshop and was a complete shock the the couple running it. So glad and lucky they were there at the time and could still do it as we travelled 3hours to get there.
