Interested in trying canyoning but not feeling too adventurous? This half day canyoning experience is the perfect relaxed adventure for beginners, families or the less-intrepid. Journey through quartzite gorges, button grass and billy pines and if you're lucky spot a wandering wombat.

Your tour begins with a 20 minute walk along the picturesque Cradle Valley Boardwalk to the beginning of the canyon, through open gum forests and button grass plains. Once you have changed into your canyoning gear you will be briefed by the guides and walk into the canyon. Once in the river make your way downstream overcoming multiple small rapids and rock jumps by walking, swimming, jumping and sliding.

You will stop along the way at several points of natural and historical significance to learn how the valley was formed and how local entrepreneurs used the waterway to their advantage. This unique tour allows you to experience the beauty of the upper section of the Dove River and learn about the natural habitat as well get a taste of what canyoning is all about.

On the Day

Session Length

  • This experience is 3-4 hours long
  • Available every day between 1st November and 30th April except Christmas Day
  • This experience begins at 8:30am or 1:30pm
  • Actual time in cave varies depending on water level, size and proficiency of the group

Numbers on the Day

This tour runs with a maximum of 12 people


In the event of rain or inclement weather your experience will still go ahead unless contacted by the experience provider

Dress Code

The water is very cold and thermal underwear and woollen or thermal socks are recommended.

Please note this experience is seasonal and bookings are subject to availability between November and April each year.

  • Each participant requires a National Park Pass, though in most cases people already have one if they are travelling around Tasmania. If you don't already have one you can purchase a day pass for $16.50 on the day of your experience
  • Participants do NOT need to be able to swim but should have a reasonable level of fitness
  • Minimum age is 8 years


Once this experience has been confirmed changes are at the discretion of the experience provider and arranged directly with them according to this policy:


  • Over 1 week prior to the date: 30% of total booking fee
  • Within 1 week of the experience date and no shows: 100% cancellation fee
