    Why You'll Love This

    What's Included?

Explore the world of our early Tasmanian pioneers and miners with an intimate guided day tour from Strahan. On the day of your exploration tour, you’ll take a seat aboard the Land Rover Defender Hi-Rail (a four-wheel drive converted into a rail car) and as you leave Strahan on the West Coast Wilderness Railway track to Lynchford, near Queenstown, you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast hamper while you take in the natural beauty of the rainforest through the vehicle's glass top roof.

From Lynchford, the hi-rail vehicle retracts its rail wheels and your comfortably appointed vehicle then transforms into a 4WD for the spectacular drive to the Bird River Track, taking in views of Frenchman’s Cap and Lake Burbury from the Mt Jukes Road then descending to follow Kelly Basin and Bird River Roads to the start of the abandoned Bird River Railway.

Before long it’s time to leave the comforts of the vehicle and make our way through the superb Tasmanian Rainforest, which borders the quiet reaches of the Bird River down to Kelly Basin, on the shores of Macquarie Harbour; the site of the old copper mining port of Pillinger.

By this time, we’re sure that you’ll have worked up quite an appetite and we stop to enjoy a picnic lunch featuring Tasmania’s finest food and wine and seafood freshly caught that morning from the Harbour’s icy depths. From here, we’ll participate in one of the many activities available including heritage walks, nature study, photography and wildlife observations such as bird watching before returning to Strahan by the luxury cruise boat, Second Nature.
