In this unique experience you'll join a local beekeeper amongst his hives, suited up & surrounded by bees. We start with a honey tasting & morning tea to learn about these remarkable pollinators; then get into a full length bee suit to open a hive & see first hand the inner workings of a colony.
Curious about the world of beekeeping? In this unique experience, you'll join a passionate beekeeper amongst his hives, suited up & surrounded by bees. We start the experience with a honey tasting of up to ten different honeys. The taste, texture, viscosity, colour & aromas are linked directly to the floral sources available to the bees who make this liquid gold from the bush & gardens around Hamish's apiary. Over morning tea you'll hear about the fascinating lifecycle of this remarkable pollinator & the important part bees play in our food cycle before then suiting up in a professional full-length beekeepers suit (+ gloves!) & moving to the hives. You'll be shown through the different styles of hive, including the Flow Hive, & be guided through the process of an inspection, checking the laying pattern of the queen, & checking for honey, and health. If we’re lucky we’ll find "Camila", the queen of the colony!
The duration of this experience is two hours.
This is an experience best enjoyed by people 10 years of age & older.
This is a small group experience with numbers limited to 8 participants. However, if you are part of a larger group we can accommodate you and simply bring in another beekeeper to open another hive.
All guests on site must be booked into the workshop if you choose not to participate in the bee hive part there is a safe place that you can watch from.
If we have to cancel on the day due to poor weather (it is an outside activity) we would aim to reschedule, but if that doesn't work once again a full refund less the merchant fees.
You must wear boots. That is, ankle-covering boots, something like riding boots, gum boots or work boots. If you only have joggers you must bring 2x pairs of long socks to cover your ankles.
This experience takes place in township of Bowral in New South Wales.
