Memorable Movie Proposals

by Trisha Mee

There was definitely magic on the silverscreen when these romantic proposals took place and while each proposal is completely different, the one thing they all share is how perfectly they represent the relationship and personality of each couple. These are the six marriage proposals we'll never tire of watching...

1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

If only moving out of the 'friend zone' and into the love zone worked out this well for everyone. While spending New Year’s Eve alone, Harry (Billy Crystal) realises he’s in love with his best friend Sally (Meg Ryan) and finds her at a party during the countdown to midnight to tell her so. When Sally denies his affections, Harry lists all the little things he loves about her, before finishing on the famous line, “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

2. The Wedding Singer (1998)

It’s awkward when the one you love is engaged to someone else, but it’s much easier to make a play when their fiance is a douchebag, as was the case in the Wedding Singer. When Robbie (Adam Sandler) discovers that Julia (Drew Barrymore) is about to board a plane to Las Vegas to marry her fiance, he goes after her only to discover they are on the same flight.  Robbie seizes the moment by serenading Julia with a personalised song, "Grow Old With You" that left even Billy Idol impressed.

3. Love Actually (2003)

This pairing is proof that language is no barrier when it comes to love. Jamie (Colin Firth) takes refuge at his French cottage after he finds his wife in bed with his best friend. While recovering from his broken heart, he begins to fall in love with his Portuguese housekeeper Aurélia (Lúcia Moniz). After Jamie returns to England he takes Portuguese language classes and flies back to France to find Aurélia. With Aurélia’s family in tow, Jamie shows up at the restaurant where she works and proposes to her in Portuguese, and Aurélia accepts his proposal in English. Cue the collective, 'Awww.'

4. Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Loathe turns into love between Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet (Keira Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) in the 2005 movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel. Lizzy forms a poor opinion of Mr. Darcy after believing the lies of George Wickham, but her opinion of Mr. Darcy changes as she finds out he is actually the good guy and Wickham is the jerk. And despite Lizzy turing his first proposal down flat, Mr. Darcy’s second attempt sees him win the girl.

5. Sex and the City The Movie (2008)

Was there a more fitting proposal than this one? Big (Chris Noth) proposes (for the second time) to Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) while on one knee in the walk-in wardrobe he built for her. In lieu of a ring, Big slips a heel on the foot of shoe-obsessed Carrie to seal the deal and fans of the show rejoiced that this on-again, off-again couple finally got it right!

6. The Proposal (2009)

Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) is forced to agree to a fake love affair and quick marriage to his dragon boss Margaret (Sandra Bullock) so that she can avoid deportation from the US. While pretending to be a newly engaged couple in Andrew’s hometown of Sitka, Alaska, they begin to develop real feelings for each other. When their romance is discovered to be a hoax by the authorities, Margaret must leave the US, but not before Andrew confesses his love in front of the whole office and proposes (for real this time) with, "Marry me... because I'd like to date you."
