Things to Do in Brisbane

by Claire Young

Love holidays, but hate travelling? With so much happening in your own backyard, there’s no need to jump on a plane for your next adventure. Here are 6 reasons to stay right where you are and have a staycation in Brisbane:

Australia's best breweries

Queensland is home to some of Australia’s best loved breweries and after all, holidays are for indulging, so why not head to a Brisbane intuition, the XXXX brewery, for a tour and beer tastings. Make your way around the heritage listed site, which dates back to 1877, to learn about the brewing process and the beer’s raw ingredients. End your tour with a tasting of the brewery’s finest beers. If you’re not ready to call it a day, move onto the city’s laneways to discover new hidden pubs and sample a unique selection of boutique brews.

Stunning cityscape

Brisbane may not be able to top Sydney’s picturesque cityscape, but we still think the city has some killer views worth checking out. Head to Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge for a twilight climb, to remind yourself just how awesome your home city is, especially at dusk. Scale to the top of the bridge for views of the Glass Mountain to the north and the world heritage-listed Lamington National Park to the south. Even Brisbane locals might learn a fun fact or two about the city and the bridge’s colourful history.

Moreton Island right on your doorstep

Take a short trip east to escape the busy city for a day of adventure on beautiful Moreton Island. See the the world’s third largest sand island from the comfort of a 4WD drive on a dessert safari tour. For those happy to get a little sandy, tobogganing down the sand dunes is a must. Take to the water for dolphin spotting and a lazy afternoon on the boat’s sun loungers. There really is so much to do that one day may not be enough to enjoy this island paradise!

Tick off a bucket list item

Holidays are for new experiences and fulfilling lifelong dreams, so don’t miss out on ticking off a bucket list item just because you stayed at home. Whether skydiving, going whale-watching or driving a racing car is at the top of your to-do list, there’s no better place to put a big fat tick next to your dream experience.

Perfect places to picnic

Local parks are great for impromptu picnics, but with more time to spare, you can find a new and special spot for lunch. Kangaroo Point Cliffs is a local favourite for a lazy afternoon with uninterrupted views of the city and surrounding suburbs.  If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also abseil down the 20-meter high cliff face. Another great vantage point and equally impressive for a picnic is the Mount Gravatt Lookout, just a short 20-minute drive from the city.

Get pampered

Who says you have to travel to Bali or Thailand to be pampered? Set aside some time for relaxation on your staycation with a Thai massage package to take care of your tired feet and limbs. The perfect way to end any holiday, with the added bonus of not having to endure a long flight home!
