RedBalloon Week: 5 days of incredible experiences

by Ben Ford

Earlier this month, RedBalloon partnered with OneWave, Make A Wish, Camp Quality, Reach Foundation, Aim For The Stars and The Smith Family to bring some brightness into the world of those who needed it most. It was a week long event aptly named, ‘RedBalloon Week’ or RBW as we came to know it.

Day 1: We kicked off RBW on Monday morning with a surfing lesson on Bondi Beach. A group of 20 people met for the first time to make the most of a beautiful sunny Sydney morning to try something most of us had never done before. With surfboards under our arms we hit the waves and channelled our inner Kelly Slater.

Day 2: It was off to Victoria to spend the day with the lovely people at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Once we’d rounded up our group, we headed off for a behind the scenes tour to meet and feed the giraffes. Seeing the smiling faces of all the kids when the giraffes leaned down to say hello and take a bite of carrot and sweet potato made the day worth it. Then it was back to base camp for lunch and a wander around the zoo before we set out on safari to see all the other exotic animals.

Day 3: We spent more time with our furry friends, this time at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo. We patted a quokka and snake and saw lots of other Australian animals including sleepy Tasmanian Devils and a playful platypus. After enjoying a BBQ lunch we were lucky enough to get a few photos with koalas and some of our Camp Quality friends took a Wild Flight ride around the aviary.

Day 4: On the fourth day into RBW we headed out on an adventure many people have on their bucket list - visiting the Great Barrier Reef. We snorkelled and swam through the coral reefs and were greeted by too many types of fish to name. It was definitely the highlight for everyone on the trip. Then on the way back to shore we broke out the face paint and let the kids loose on our faces - a risky move, but it was lots of fun.

Day 5: We were a little tired, but really excited for the day out at sea on Sydney Harbour on an America’s Cup yacht. With the wind in our hair and the water below us we got to experience what it’s like to be a yachting professional in one of the world’s biggest sailing races, minus the shiny trophy at the end.

RedBalloon Week was 5 fun-filled days of making new friends, creating new memories and giving families fun experiences to share in together which they wouldn’t normally have done or have the chance to do. It’s weeks like this that make me really proud to be a RedBallooner.

A special thanks to our suppliers who made this week possible: Let’s Go Surfing, Werribee Open Range Zoo, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Passions of Paradise and Explore Sailing.
