Leisurely paddle down the Yarra River whilst listening to birdsong and admiring the pristine bushland on the water's edge during this self guided kayak tour. Smoothly glide down the river at your own pace and stop off at one of the many lunch spots along the way. A perfect way to spend the day!

Strike out on your own or with some friends and explore the sparkling Yarra River lined with untouched bushland and brimming with bird life. On arrival, you get a quick instruction on kayak basics like how to hold your paddle and how to adjust the foot pedals. Then, it's time to grab your life jacket and be on your way down the river. The first section of the river is full of parks with natural bushland. Enjoy the peace and serenity of your surroundings, filled with lovely birdsong, as you smoothly glide across the water. You'll also be able to see beautiful historic houses along the river banks.

Cruising at your own pace, you can decide where you would like to stop for lunch, at one of the many riverside rowing ramps or amongst the sculptures at Herring Island. Herring island has BBQs and toilet facilities - so bring along some food to cook up. Remember to keep an eye out for native lizards, water dragons and seals that frequent the river as you stroke along. Towards the end of the 12km journey, admire the stunning city views from your kayak. Make sure you bring dry clothes as once you have arrived at Boat House Drive you will be expected to book an Uber or transport yourself back to the car.

Session Length

Morning and afternoon sessions available
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time
The session takes two to four hours inclusive of a safety briefing

Guidelines

Participants must be 14 years of age and over
Life jackets must be worn at all times while in the kayak
Participants must keep their kayaks to the right of the river (opposite to driving in Australia)
An average fitness level is required. The distance to kayak is 8km

Cancellation

Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Numbers on the Day

The provider can accommodate groups of up to 8 participants.

Spectators

Friends can follow along on foot or bike along the river some of the way.

Weather

In the event of poor weather conditions, your experience may be rescheduled.

Dress Code

Outdoor clothing is best, Old runners (that can get wet), Quick dry shorts, A light fleece top, A light rain jacket and, a Hat.

The distance is 8km. Average paddlers go about 3-4km per hour.

This experience takes place on the Yarra River, VIC. Start Location Hawthorn Rowing Club, Hawthorn 3122. Finish Location Boathouse Drive, Melbourne 3004. We suggest taking public transport as parking at the start location is limited.

We had a lovely day kayaking down the Yarra. The instructions and safety briefing were helpful and clear and everything ran smoothly
