Embark on a twilight sea kayak trip and witness the bustling city of Melbourne shine from the thousands of twinkling city lights and the vibrant setting sun from the water. You'll hear historical commentary from your friendly guide as you paddle and take in the sights.

Interested in seeing the city of Melbourne from a new angle? Perfect for beginners, this sea kayak tour is the only way to get up close to yachts, ferries and ships passing by, whilst being able to admire the beautiful colours of the sunset. You will be provided with a personal floatation device, paddle jacket and paddle, before being fitted in your kayak with an appropriate spray deck to try keep the water out. Once kitted up, you will undertake an important safety briefing including a capsize drill on land. Then, you will be paired up into paddling partners. Most kayaks are double kayaks with single kayaks offered to more experienced paddlers in the group. After going through some basic strokes for 10 mins, you will begin to set out on the adventure paddling as a group.

Immerse yourself in the stunning Melbourne City views from the water's edge, twinkling with city lights and coloured by the sunset. On the return, you will stop for the spectacular pyrotechnics (exploding flames) at the Crown Casino. When the group returns to the meeting point, the gear is packed away and you can change into some warm clothes. After a couple of hours of kayaking, you will have worked up quite the appetite; there are plenty of food options along South Bank and surrounding areas for you to explore!

This experience is not suitable for those with bad backs or existing injuries.

Minimum age is 12 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult in the same tandem kayak
A reasonable level of fitness is required
Maximum weight 120kg, maximum height 2m

Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Numbers on the Day

Minimum of four and maximum of 16 participants. Should minimum numbers not be met, the experience provider reserves the right to reschedule your experience for a later date.

Weather

In the event of rain or inclement weather your experience will still go ahead unless contacted by the experience provider.

We had such a lovely time kayaking the Yarra River at twilight. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the city skyline from a different angle in daylight and twilight. Our guides were also so friendly and took many pictures for us. Highly recommend this experience even if you are from the area!

Rohan and team are very professional at kayaking and with 15 mins of instructions we were able to do the entire tour with ease. Till now you have seen sunset from sides of Southbank and south wharf, but in this kayak you’ll witness it from the river. It’s a beautiful scene. You’ll see the best sunset. You almost must be strong enough to row the kayak for 2 hours because it does take some strength. Do some arm exercises before you go for kayaking For this tour: Carry extra pair of clothes because you’ll get wet 100% or maybe wear snow pants so that you don’t feel cold when your denim gets wet - trust me it’ll happen the minute you’re in water. Carry some small packets of protein bars or snacks. Half way through the tour some chocolates and hot chocolate is served as well. The activity could get affected by rise in water level in Yarra river or bad weather. Organisers will let you know well in advance if they’re going ahead with the schedule or not.

We had such a lovely evening kayaking on the Yarra. The team who led us were friendly, informative and safe. The kayaking was great and was not difficult to do. We had some gorgeous views of the city and even saw the fire display. I highly recommend this experience!

So glad to have had this experience. As a Melbournian I was surprised how big and eautiful the Yarra is when on the water and how pretty the city looked. The staff at Sea Kayak were friendly and professional and they covered safety and training very well. The timing of the tour is perfect - get to experience full sun then sunset then experience the lights of the city reflecting on the water as it gets dark. The pace was quite swift do you have to be reasonably fit. The only downside was the snacks - could have been better. I really enjoyed the evening and would love to do it again!
