Experience a slice of history aboard the restored Mary Valley Rattler! Departing from the historic Gympie Station, you will enjoy a scenic return journey to Amamoor. Restored to its former glory, why not arrive early and spend some time wandering the old beauty. Learn about the Mary Valley Rattler line, its people and its history. Then, board the locomotive for a nostalgic journey through some of the most beautiful parts of Queensland. Follow the meticulously restored tracks, winding around curves, over bridges and many gentle hills. Take delight in the gorgeous scenery before arriving in the quaint town of Amamoor. Here, you can watch a fascinating experience where the train turns on a heritage turntable. Jump back on board the train for the relaxing journey to Gympie.

Please arrive 45 minutes prior to your departure time
This experience departs from 9:00am on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday departures.

Guidelines

There are no facilities to provide for or accommodate high chairs or prams as they will not fit through the doorways of the carriages and some exhibits are accessible only by stairs.

Cancellation

Change your booking up to 7 days before the start time of your experience
Changes are not permitted within 7 days of your experience
Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

The operation of steam is subject to weather conditions, total fire ban, volunteer driver availability or situations out of the control of the Rattler Railway Company. At times there may be an operational necessity to change the scheduled engine.

Gympie Train Experience

This experience is excellent. The Cafe food is first rate for a bite to eat before you go. There was a lovely elderly gentleman playing piano in the old station, which was most entertaining. The service at the Amamoor station was fantastic & we were treated to am amazing singing/ukulele/guitar group that were fantastic. Highly recommended 👌

A Trip back in time!

Booking this experience was trouble free between Red Balloon and Mary Valley Rattler and all on- line. Staff at the Gympie Historical train station were very courteous and helpful. The trip itself was a very real step back in time with the old restored carriages and engine. As we chugged along on a beautiful day, the scenery was a shutterbugs delight. Everything was lush and green after recent rains. There was a stop at Amamoor for food whilst the engine was turned around for the return journey. That in itself was fantastic to watch. I would highly recommend this experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip on the steam train from Gympie to Amamoor. What a magnificent engine, and the carriages were beautiful. The staff, who are all volunteers, we’re extremely helpful and went out of their way to make the entire experience enjoyable. I was amazed at how many people waved at us as we went past cars and houses. Everyone waved back! Although it was winter, the countryside was still green in places, and the Valley was beautiful and interesting. The information provided through the PA system was interesting too. The volunteer dedicated to our carriage was friendly and spent time chatting to each passenger. Another highlight of the trip was the engine being turned around at Amamoor. Really interesting. Of course the sounds and smell of the train and engine only added to the nostalgia. Overall a great experience and a well worthwhile trip.

Both my husband & I had a wonderful time on The Mary Rattler steam train. Hearing the steam whistle & seeing the smoke blowing from the funnel such a nostalgic experience . All run by the amazing volunteers who do a fantastic job . The cafe at the station serve breakfast & lunch . We had the best coffees there . High recommend this experience
