Very enjoyable walking tour

This was a really interesting food tour - very varied food and all very enjoyable. It was great to hear from the various providers about their food and experiences running businesses in Footscray. I have lived in the western suburbs for a long time and still managed to learn a lot about the local culture. The only criticisms was that there was a bit too much food! :)

Enjoyable, interesting selection of African food

Really liked the variety of African food. Enjoyed both traditional Sudanese and Ethiopian dishes. Tour guide Masaret was very pleasant and informative. Would like to taste traditional African desert as part of the experience.

I was looking for a bit more

AdventuresinMelbourne 28 August 2014

I have tried some African food before, and I think this tour was aimed at the total novice. I enjoyed the Sudanese food, though I thought the service was a bit slow on the food there. It would have been nice to take away something from the tour with the names of what we ate and pictures of them on it in case we wanted to revisit similar restaurants. I also wish some tasting had been available at the spice shop. I understand it's a busy shop not built for catering group tastings, but figuring out a way to make that a part of the tour would make it much more worth while. And bringing along an iPad or two to show short videos on how some of the dishes are prepared would have added more to the experience. I enjoyed the Sudanese and Ethiopian food and the spice shop, I maybe would have liked one more small stop or snack or something to be included. If I had known that it was only those two places I would have skipped the tour since I have had Ethiopian food plenty of times.

Fantastic

Taste of Africa

Scottidog 26 August 2013

We were given this experience for our wedding anniversary. What a great idea. We met at Footscray Station and headed off for our first course. I was amazed that we knew so little about the African community in Footscray. Our guide was beautifully spoken and very knowledgeable, talking about the different cultures and traditions within countries of Africa. We visited a bakery specialising in traditional Ethiopian bread, an African homewares type store and another restaurant for lunch. The chef there was lovely, making us feel like she was cooking for guests rather than customers. The food was beautiful, deeply flavoursome, rich, and very different to the more well known cuisines in Melbourne. The African coffee was strong and sweet and was served with the tradition of the coffee ceremony. The other people on the tour introduced themselves from the start and conversation was easy. It was wonderful to experience something so different and learn about another culture.
