Celebrity Dads

by Nicola Heath

These seven celebrity dads deserve a special mention this Father’s Day for making fatherhood look like the best job in the world.

David Beckham

David Beckham was once the most famous footballer in the world. Now he’s a candidate for the world’s most famous father. Becks is a devoted dad to his four children – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper - with wife Victoria, the Spice Girl-turned- celebrity fashion designer. The glamorous family is regularly snapped on the red carpet, in the front row at fashions shows, at sporting events and on shopping sprees. His greatest achievement, he says, is his family. “What matters is being a good father and a good husband – just being connected to family as much as possible.”

Prince William

Prince William is another pretty famous dad. With his wife Catherine, and their two children George and Charlotte, the Cambridges make a picture-perfect family, endearing the royals to a new generation of fans. Wills is a hands on father. When footage went viral of the Queen admonishing her grandson, who had knelt down to speak with George while the royal family stood together on the Buckingham Palace balcony, parenting experts were much more forgiving, praising the young dad for his attentive approach.

Ryan Reynolds

From outside appearances, Ryan Reynolds has it all. Not only is the successful Canadian actor, star of films including The Proposal and Deadpool, married to Blake Lively, the couple welcomed their second child in 2016. But Reynolds is the first one to poke fun at his charmed life. Since he became a father in 2014 with the birth of his daughter James, Reynolds has entertained his millions of fans with tweets about the lighter side of parenthood. “After this morning’s diaper, my daughter finally earned the teardrop tattoo on her face,” reads one tweet all parents can relate to. “Nothing better than spending an entire morning staring into my baby daughter’s eyes, whispering, “I can’t do this”,” reads another.

Neil Patrick Harris

American actor, singer, producer, comedian and television host Neil Patrick Harris added yet another string to his bow in 2010 when he and his partner David Burtka (who he later married in a ceremony in Italy in 2014) became the proud parents of twins, Gideon and Harper, born via surrogate mother. Harris’s Instagram feed is a tribute to happy home life, showing the foursome on vacation, hanging out in their hometown of New York, and celebrating special occasions like Father’s Day – an important day in the Burtka-Harris household.

Jamie Foxx

A BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and Oscar are among Jamie Foxx’s many acting awards, for roles in movies like Ray and Collateral. His red carpet date on many occasions has been his daughter Corinne (he has another daughter, seven-year old Annalise). In 2016, Corinne attended in her own right when she was named Miss Golden Globe. Foxx delivered a touching speech in Corinne’s honour at the event, applauding his daughter for her independence and faultless behaviour. “This young lady never asked me for anything. This young lady’s never been in trouble. This young lady deserves this moment,” he gushed. “This young lady is absolutely the love of my life. This young lady is absolutely my heart.”

Hamish Blake

Hamish Blake might be one half of popular radio duo Hamish and Andy, but he’s also known as father to Australia’s most adorable two-year-old, Sonny. In his typically cheeky tone, Blake loves to make fun of family life on social media. His thousands of Instagram fans love the cute pictures he shares of Sonny and their oddball captions. Who could forget the time Blake made an uncanny likeness of his adorably chubby baby son using croissants and bread?

Jamie Oliver

The beloved British chef and his wife Jools welcomed another son, River Rocket to the world in August 2016. This is the couple's fifth child who like his siblings Poppy Honey, 15, Daisy Boo, 14, Petal Blossom, 8, and Buddy Bear, 6, share a truly unique name. It isn’t just the welfare of his own children that keeps Oliver awake at night. The famous chef is also a passionate advocate of healthy food in schools, launching his Ministry of Food campaign in 2008.
