National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect and learn the history and culture of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Putting a spotlight on the past, present and future, this year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, encourages Australians to take that next step forward in the reconciliation journey.
We’ve made it easier to find and support Indigenous-owned businesses by partnering with Welcome to Country to make learning about authentic Aboriginal culture more accessible. These incredible experiences don’t just empower First Nations communities, but they also help us get one step closer to reconciliation through knowledge and reflection.
Are you ready to take the next step this NRW? Here are three experiences you can do to make a difference.
Uncover history and get ready to understand more about the most ancient human culture on earth with a guided tour through The Rocks. Taking you back in time, this tour on Eora Country will detail a different way of life in Warrane (Sydney).
Diving into the Aboriginal people’s saltwater heritage, you’ll understand the spiritual connection between the adjoining waterways and foreshores of Sydney Harbour. Sharing maps and other resources, your passionate guide will explain the markings across the area and show you fresh water sources that can still be found in nature to this very day.
Highlighting traditions upheld by the Indigenous community, such as ways of thinking and the importance of community, this fascinating tour will change your perspective on how you see the environment and life around you. By the end, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for the land we live on.

Looking to immerse yourself in the world of nature and native cuisine? Then head to Bangalow Parklands for this guided bushtucker tour in Byron Bay.
Introducing you to all kinds of native plant species, you’ll learn about the different native plants and how they’re used in the Indigenous community. Your guide will also tell you traditional stories and share the history as you go. They might even teach you some Bundjalung language along the way.
After the bushwalk comes to an end, it’s time to tame your appetite with a delicious range of Indigenous Australian bush tucker. Served with a bush tea and biscuit, you’ll even sample some of the edible plants you crossed earlier.
Prepare yourself for a powerful culture experience as the sun sets over Mandingalbay Yininji Country. A real treat for the senses, this after dark sunset cruise with canapes is the perfect mix of food and culture exploration.
Start the evening off with a cruise around Cairns Marina. Once in the calm waters of Trinity Inlet, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the changing sky before reaching the reserve for a warm Welcome to Country and traditional Smoke Cleansing Ceremony. Settling in, you’ll enjoy delicious canapés, made from native ingredients.
As you sit down, your guide will share stories of the local culture and share artifacts before making the journey home. One thing is certain — you’ll leave with a deeper insight than you did before you boarded.
