Experience how portraits were made during the Victorian era at Sydneys Premier Wet Plate Portrait Studio. Have your portrait taken and be invited into the darkroom to observe this historical 160 year old photographic process unfold. Leave with a unique 5x7 tintype guaranteed to last for generations.
This boutique photographic studio is bringing back the historic practice of wet plate collodion portraiture. In a two hour session, your image will be captured onto a sheet of 5x7 aluminium plate using techniques and equipment developed during the Victorian era. Being invited into the darkroom to observe this historical photographic process is memorable and watching the image appear on the plate surface is mesmerising. At the end of a session, you will leave with a unique and original hand-made tintype portraying a timeless beauty and character seldom seen in today's digital world along with a complimentary digital file of the image.
Not recommended for people who suffer from Epilepsy
Once this experience has been confirmed, changes are at the discretion of the experience provider and arranged directly with them according to this policy:
Maximum 2 people per wet plate portrait
Family and friends are welcome.
We shoot hail, rain or shine.
These images will be around for generations to come so dress to impress. Tintypes do not register colour in the same way as a black and white image would. Blues and whites tend to appear almost white while reds appear very dark. Sometimes clothing and skin tones may appear different than expected because of the pigments that make up the colours. Clothing with text or graphics will appear backwards in the final image as the process flips everything horizontally.
A portrait session includes one tintype only (unless additional plates are purchased) and a complimentary digital file of the image. Your session does not include retakes unless there are clear issues with the image, such as closed eyes. Retakes are done at the discretion of the photographer.
The studio is located in Leichhardt, Sydney.
