Take a step back in time and discover what life was like as a criminal within the infamous Adelaide Gaol walls. Try on hand cuffs and leg irons, sit in the cell of condemned prisoners and visit the prisoner graves within the grounds of Adelaide Gaol. There's so much history waiting to be discovered!
With almost 150 grueling years of operation, Adelaide Gaol offers a wealth of history. Open from 1841 to 1988, the Gaol was one of Australia’s longest continuously operational prisons, housing some of the state’s most notorious and dangerous criminals. Almost 300,000 prisoners called this intriguing place home and 45 prisoners were executed, including the only woman to be executed in South Australia. Find your way within these eerie walls on this self-guided tour and undercover the hidden stories of South Australia’s criminal past. Let your imagination run wild as you picture what daily prison life would have been like. Visit the interactive exhibition where you can touch artefacts that were used all those years ago. Try on handcuffs and leg irons to get a feel of what it was like to wear them and try to unpick the locks to discover how hard it would be to escape! If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of one of their ghostly sightings.
