Gain a deeper connection with the Yolngu women in East Arnhem Land on this five day women and girls-only tour. Take part in cultural activities specific to Yolngu women like weaving, painting, astrology and much more, and visit the extraordinary art centre in Yirrkala, Buku-Larrnggay.
In Yolngu, the land is considered their mother as it nurtures, heals and guides their lives. This is why the female experience and connection to the Yolngu women is often so profound and life-changing. Gain a deeper connection to the Yolngu sisterhood and learn about their culture, history and country on this five-day women and girls-only tour. Over the tour, you will take part in a variety of cultural activities specific to Yolngu women. These can include weaving, painting, astrology, healing ceremony, dancing and gathering oysters or mud crabs, cooking and bush medicine. You'll also visit the renowned art centre in Yirrkala, Buku-Larrnggay that houses local works of art painted on bark, Larrakitj (ceremonial poles), woven baskets, jewellery and more. IMPORTANT: There will be Yol?u men present at the homeland that you visit. This is their home; it is where they live. However, most of the activities undertaken will be led by the Yol?u women.
This tour is for women and girls only.
Once this experience has been confirmed, changes are at the discretion of the experience provider and are arranged with them directly according to this policy:
Minimum of 6 and a maximum of 14 participants.
Activities undertaken during the tour may vary due to weather conditions and seasons.
Yolngu women dress conservatively and we ask that you do the same. Long skirts, long shorts or pants/trousers are suitable, as are t-shirts and knee length shorts. Please do not wear bikinis, mini-skirts or shorts that show butt-cheeks. Wear cool, comfortable clothing that will protect you from the sun and insects. A good pair of walking shoes is recommended, and possibly a pair that you don't mind getting wet as there may be times that you will walk through water, or along rocky outcrops along the waters edge. A sweatshirt or a long-sleeved windbreaker for cooler nights and mornings is recommended. Please try to keep your luggage to maximum of 10kg preferably in a soft suitcase of aircraft hand luggage size.
Accommodation is simple, and shared, as are the bathrooms. You will be sharing a room, or a tent with other tour participants whilst you are staying in the homeland. You can however pay a little extra to have a single room for the last night of the itinerary which is spent in Nhulunbuy. The tour itinerary is not set in stone. The aim of the tour is to participate in the unstructured and less regimented Yol?u daily life. Each Yolngu homeland offers a slightly different experience, and each time we visit we may be hosted by different family members. Your Yolngu hosts will lead each day's activities, and activities will vary depending on the season and availability of materials.
This experience takes place in East Arnhem Land, NT.

That’s 10% of the Australian population! When we started ‘doing’ experiences in 2001, Facebook didn’t exist; the iPod had just been invented; John Howard was Prime Minister; and Destiny's Child were popular (yikes!). We’ve been at this business of experiences for quite a while, so put your trust in us to show you a good time.
