Strap in, throttle up, and lift off the surface of the water on a jetpack or flyboard. It's one of the newest ways to spend a day out, and no flying experience is needed. First time jetpack flying can feel strange for the first few seconds. Then something clicks, and you're up. Give it as a gift for the person who's tried everything, or book it for yourself and see what the fuss is about.
Picked a session already, or still weighing up your options? Here's a closer look at what a jetpack or flyboard experience actually involves, from your first briefing on land to touching down after your first flight.
Every jetpack experience starts on land. An instructor walks you through the gear and the basics before you get in the water, so you're not working it out mid-flight. Once you're in, it's your instructor's voice in your ear and the thrust under your feet.
Most first-timers are up and flying within their first few minutes.
Searching for a jetpack near me? Right now, sessions run out of two locations, Penrith and the Central Coast, both in New South Wales. If you like the idea of trying the jetpack and the board in one booking, the Jetpack and/or Flyboard Experience - Penrith lets you choose on the day. Prefer the Central Coast? The Jetpack and Flyboard Combo Experience - Central Coast covers both jetpack and flyboard in a single session.
Not ready to commit to a full flight? The Jetpack or Flyboard Teaser Experience - Penrith is a shorter taste of the same water jetpack experience, good for a first go or a smaller gift.
Every jetpack hire includes full safety gear and an instructor in the water with you, so the technical side is handled on the day. You just show up ready to get wet.
A jetpack straps onto your feet like a pair of boots, and you fly free, steering with your whole body. A flyboard straps you onto a single board, closer to a surfboard with jets underneath, so it feels more like skimming and surfing through the air. Both run on the same water propulsion, just a different feel underfoot.
Most flyers reach up to 10 metres above the water. Once you've got the hang of steering, you can start adding turns and other movements in the air. The Jetpack or Flyboard Experience - Introductory - Penrith is a good place to build up your height gradually.
You don't need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable having your face in the water from time to time. Life jackets and a full safety briefing are included in every session.
Easier than it looks. Most people are up and moving within their first attempts, thanks to the land-based training that comes before every flight. The Jetpack and/or Flyboard Experience - Gosford includes this training as standard, so you'll know what to expect before you're in the water.
Sessions currently run out of Penrith and the Central Coast, both in New South Wales. If you'd rather ease in with a shorter session first, the Jetpack or Flyboard Teaser Experience - Central Coast is a lighter option to start with.
Swimwear or activewear you don't mind getting wet. If you wear glasses, sports straps are recommended to keep them on and contact lens wearers should stick to disposable lenses for the day.
If a jetpack isn't quite the fit, RedBalloon has a full range of water sports to look through.
For something with a bit more spin than lift, a Jet Boat Ride on Sydney Harbour swaps flying for speed, spins and wave jumps. Prefer a slower pace? A Stand Up Paddle Boarding Rental is a good way to explore at your own speed, and if height is more the drawcard than water, a Scenic Parasail Over the Gold Coast takes you 350 feet above the water for the view alone.
