I first flew in a DC3 in the early fifties when I was about 8 or 10, my last flight was in the mid fifties when was about 14. I told our children of my passion for the DC3 over the years. Last Christmas they chipped in and gave my wife and myself one of the best surprises we could imagine.
We waited to take our dinner flight when we thought the weather (and daylight) was best. So on December 1 we headed off to Essendon not knowing exactly what was in store for us. Yes 7:00pm sharp is 7:00pm sharp. The experience started the second we walked in the terminal door, the atmosphere, the attentiveness of the staff, drinks and nibbles and "Casablanca". But the best was yet to come. On boarding, it all came back, the "steep" climb up the aisleway to our seats and the feeling of being in something extra special. Then when the engines burst into life the adrenalin started pumping. Once we were airborne we could savour the scenery and enjoy the friendly service and wine. Dinner was fairly basic but enjoyable. The amount of time in the air is ample, especially the numerous circuits over Melbourne CBD. Also one of the highlights was a visit to the cockpit. We were circling Melbourne just on twilight and the lights were just coming on in the buildings and streets. So I would say any time of the evening would be good.
The wrap up back at the terminal was also great - but just wish we had put more effort into the era look. Sadly we didn't win the best dressed for the occasion award.
Will definitely do it again!
