A relaxing overnight break for anyone who wants to experience a trip back to an era when life took on a slower pace. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay before awaking the next morning to a delightful steam train experience as VIP guests of the Victorian Goldfields Railway.
Spend the night enjoying the hospitality of a comfortable country motel in a delightful garden setting and enjoy breakfast before taking a short walk the station the next morning for an unforgettable steam train experience.
Your experience starts as you are welcomed aboard as special guests of the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Sit back and relax as you take a historic journey from Maldon to Castlemaine on the former Victorian Railways Castlemaine to Maldon Broad-Gauge Branchline in the Mount Alexander Shire.
You will be provided with a glass of local wine and nibbles to enjoy on your steam train journey. On your return journey, either you or your partner will have the privilege of making the journey up on the locomotive with the loco crew which adds a unique and exciting extra dimension to your steam train experience.
Please note: This experience does not operate during February.
This experience voucher is valid for 12 months from date of purchase.
Venue:
Maldon (Central Victoria). A 90 minute drive from Melbourne.
Session Length
Trains run on all Sundays, Wednesdays and some Public Holidays. A mutually suitable date and time needs to be arranged between participants and the railway. It is a 2 hour return journey which can be extended with a visit to either township of Castlemaine or Maldon.
Guidelines:
Any adult can participate. The motel accomodation is 3 star and overlooks picturesque gardens. Each unit is antique furnished, with air conditioning, full ensuite with bath and mini bar. Breakfast is included.

Weather does not interfere with journey , except on days of extreme fire danger, when a diesel loco substitutes for steam.

It was great to have everything organised instead of my having to do it!! We were treated like 'royalty'. Highly recommend this trip We had the full experience with the train breaking down x 2 and I had up front experience in the Engine room - this was really special for me is I have a technical brain and my father had a love of steam engines and I have seen hundreds of them on display BUT not in motion

It was great steam train ride and partner enjoyed driving with the driver of the train. Maldon is a lovely little place and so is Castlemaine. Would recommend to anyone looking for something special to do.

I would like to congratulation the wonderful staff of the goldfields railway and the place where we stayed in Maldon, everything was just fantastic. The footplate ride was the highlight of the whole trip both for my daughter and my husband. We had a ball just got home. On the train, everyone was so friendly. The wine and cheeseplatter was good value, only thing was the hotel in Maldon we chose to eat at, was a little slow in the dining area, but still the food was worth the wait. It has been a great weekend, visiting a few towns on the way, and Maldon of course, the motel was good and comfortable, the team at the railway station and on board the train were fantastic, they made it fun, the weather was sunny and mild, which helps too. I would definitely recommend the package to any one interested. Thanks Guys & Gals !!!!

A great experience. Accom was a wonderful boutique-like experience with great service, very comfortable and friendly staff. The steam train was a once in a lifetime pleasure and should be done by anyone who has not had the pleasure of traveling on the engine for part of the journey.

My wife and I enjoyed the trip. However, I believe it could be improved if it was possible to provide some commentary during the trip. Some background on the rail line, construction etc, and early settlers in the area, any discoveries of gold etc.

Wonderful experience. Very pleasant sitting outside the room with a glass of wine and looking out on the cottage type garden at the Eaglehawk Motel in Maldon. Steam train ride was excellent. Great view out the back of the first class carriage. The cheese platter and drinks complimented the ride. The husbands who rode in the engine thoroughly enjoyed the experience. All came back grinning like "Cheshire Cats". The 11 year old "Guard Dog" won everyone over each time he followed the guard through...Wonderful experience. Very pleasant sitting outside the room with a glass of wine and looking out on the cottage type garden at the Eaglehawk Motel in Maldon. Steam train ride was excellent. Great view out the back of the first class carriage. The cheese platter and drinks complimented the ride. The husbands who rode in the engine thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was the most wonderful day, Terry is a train nut so the engine ride was the chance of a lifetime. We have found a real TREASURE in the motel. A wonderful place to stay. It was a terrific gift from our kids and one we will always remember and treasure hope they look at RedBalloon again next year.

Our motel and hostess[FAY} were wonderful. The surroundings of our cottage was just beautiful and I would have liked to stay longer. I especially would have liked to buy the period hotel next door to our accommodation. The weekend was wonderful. The motel was comfortable, clean and well appointed and the proprietor was friendly and sincere. And, the setting was VERY pretty. The steam train ride was thrilling, exciting and one not to be missed. We were treated like royalty by all the staff who could not have been more friendly nor attentive. The whole weekend was memorable and we would recommend it to everybody.
