This informative half day course will include both on land and in water training to maximise your learning potential. You will learn professional techniques as well has how to problem solve to ensure that every kayaking experience you have is positive and full of fun.

Course Outline:

Dry Land

  • Overview
  • Equipment Orientation
  • Individual fitting of participants to sea kayaks
  • Sheltered beach for dry run paddling exercises
  • Paddling technique (Dry Run)
  • Forward stroke
  • Minimum stress paddling
  • Reverse paddling
  • Stopping
  • Sweep strokes (forward and reverse)
  • Draw strokes
  • Low support or low brace · sculling for support
  • Pawlatta (Extended) and normal

Water Training

  • Stroke practice
  • Capsize drill (in water shallow enough to stand in and will be completed toward end of training session)
  • Self rescue options
  • Paddle float rescue ­practice
  • Assisted rescues - practice
  • Cowboy/straddle re-entry
  • Sling/paddle float combination
  • Eskimo roll (demonstration)
On the Day

Session Length

  • The tour starts at 8:30am from May until August and 7:45am from September until April
  • In summer, weekend dates are particularly busy and should be booked at least 3 weeks in advance
  • The tour runs for approximately 5 hours (concludes ay approx. 1:30pm)
  • The total paddling time is approximately 3 hrs
  • This experience operates everyday except Tuesdays

Numbers on the Day

The maximum numbers on the day are 8 per group


In the event of cancellation due to weather the provider will re-schedule the experience

Dress Code

For Paddling: Footwear ( with a heel or heel strap ) suitable for getting wet ( wetsuit boots, sandals, old trainers ) / Warm spare clothing eg. fleece jumper / swimmers / thermal shirt / quick dry shorts or boardies / beach towel / Waterproof Camera / Wetsuit for in water Training scenarios / water bottle with 1ltr capacity.

  • A basic level of fitness is required
  • Participants should have no serious medical conditions that may effect them on the water
  • Participants will be required to sign a medical statement and liability release prior to the activity
  • Participants must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • The ability to swim is NOT compulsory
  • Minimum age for children is 14 years
  • Please bring a water bottle 1 litre capacity
  • Larger or private groups can be accommodated for
  • Toilets are available at the start and end of the tour
