If you have a passion for steam trains then this experience gets you up close and personal. All the sights, sounds and atmosphere of an authentic steam train journey will take you back to another era when steam ruled the rails.

Your experience starts as you are welcomed aboard as special guests of the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Sit back and relax as you take a leisurely return journey from either Maldon to Castlemaine or Castlemaine to Maldon on the former Victorian Railways Castlemaine to Maldon Broad-Gauge Branchline linking the two historic goldfields towns.

You will be provided with a glass of local wine and nibbles to enjoy on board our First Class Carriage During the journey , one participant will enjoy an extra unique dimension of the steam train experience by riding with the crew on the locomotive on a section of the line. You will also receive a complimentary copy of our full colour souvenir book.

Please note: This experience does not operate during February.

This experience voucher is valid for 12 months from date of purchase.

Venue:

Maldon (Central Victoria). A 90 minute drive from Melbourne. This is a return journey.

Session Length

A mutually suitable date and time needs to be arranged between participants and the railway to ensure availability. The time table allows passengers to spend time in either Castlemaine or Maldon before returning. The train journey takes 75 minutes.

Guidelines:

Any adult can participate. The Loco Ride has a minimum age of 16 years for participants.

This experience is for two people. Although there will be other passengers on the train.

N/A

Weather:

Weather does not interfere with journey , except on days of extreme fire danger, when a diesel loco substitutes for steam.

Rated 4 out of 5 by good day out adventure was excellent but directions to site need more info. great for the mechanically minded by nothing for the partner. understand that a package was purchased but morning tea/afternoon tea was not forthcoming the entry to the web site for confirming dates and getting details was difficult, phone call was more helpful grandchildren and grandfather enjoyed the experience 14 May 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great experience and relaxing A worthwhile experience, a trip back in time, a friend can actually recall travelling on this section when in was open as part of the network. The time in Maldon was just enough and an easy walk back to the station, although there is a courtesy bus. On the return trips to Castlemaine I was able to ride up front with the crew, well worth it. After a brief stop it was a walk through all the different carriages to first class at the rear and we were spoilt with a cheese and fruit platter and a nice red. Thanks to the butler David you made the trip with your friendly service and chat, I look forward to visiting again. And thanks to the chap who checked our tickets I appreciate you taking the time to tak to me about the history of the carriages. A special thank you to the ticket office attendant who greeted me and David's son the trainee in the loco for again saying hello and being friendly. 14 May 2013

Rated 5 out of 5 by FANTASTIC This was the best experience ever....the staff were great. From the moment we got to the station, they just couldn't do enough for us & they were so informative, there wasn't a question they couldn't answer. The platter & wine were a nice touch. My hubby did the ride on the engine & he raved about it for ages after. Even the freezing weather didn't put a damper on the day. I would thoroughly recommend this trip to everyone. It was a great experience & one we would repeat if we visited Melbourne again. 9 April 2013

Though we didn't have reserved seats for our ride from Castlemaine.This was rectified on the return leg. Also it was disappointing that we didn't experience a ride on a steam train rather we had a diesel engine due to the weather. 12 March 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good experience Unfortuneatly we were not aware that the use of steam engine was subject to weather conditions and so when we arrived the ride was being pulled by a diesil engine; also there was a fault with the line and we had to make the return journey by coach which did change the mystic of experience somewhat. In saying this the staff on the train where excellent and did their utmost to make good for the couple of hiccups we encountered... We would have liked to have been informed in the gift voucher that there was a possibility of having the diesil engine during the summer months as we would have planned the trip for a different time of the year. 18 January 2013
