The birth of our elephant calves marks the beginning of a new journey for elephants in Australia. We are offering the opportunity to meet our latest Asian Elephants! Visitors will be able to spend time and get up close with Mali and Ongard. Grab front row seats and watch the herd romp!

The first female elephant born on our shores, the first elephant conceived through artificial insemination and the first elephants to be born at Melbourne Zoo. Mali now has a little brother to play with and to help continue Melbourne Zoo’s breeding program for this threatened species.

Session Length

The Mali and Ongard Experience runs for 50 minutes, starting at 10.15am. The experience is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Following their Mali and Ongard Experience visitors are encouraged to enjoy the rest of Melbourne Zoo between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Guidelines:

Children under 15 years must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Numbers:

Meet Mali and Ongard is an experience for up to six people.

Weather:

Storm events are not as easily advised; visitors may have to be contacted on the day by Melbourne Zoo Admission staff.

    This is follow-up feedback...my experience with the elephants was one I will always treasure...and my follow-up experience now with Melb Zoo has blown me away - as mentioned I was frustrated I did not know who the elephant was with Mali that I met...Melb Zoo have now phoned and emailed me personally to let me know that I met Dokkon. This was in response to a message from me on their answering machine as well as the feedback I first left on your website. This has left me most impressed with Melb ...

    Awesome experience, one I will greatly treasure. The only thing I am bugged about is not remembering who the female was we met with Mali. It wasn't on hand which we didn't mind, she was gorgeous but can't remember her name!

    It was absolutely wonderful! I love elephants and to be so close to them was truly amazing, I can't believe I patted Mali and her mum. It was a very informative encounter, i learned a lot about these beautiful animals, I would gladly do it all over again.

    The keepers were all wonderful and spent a lot of time with me ,they were not rushing me through .when the elephants were up close,it was take as much time as you like and enjoy the experience.a thoroughly enjoyable day and would recommend it to everyone and have already done so.

    Just a little disappointed as thought it would be both babies but otherwise it was really great. The keeepers and every-one at Melbourne zoo were wonderful

    I enjoyed the experience, but I only got close to one of the calves and not both as the name suggests.

    I had the best time as I was the only person there and had the elphants to myself so I had more time with them the staff at the Zoo were really nice and explained all areas to me so that I could understand all about the elephants.

    I really loved meeting such beautiful animals. Elephants are my favoutite animal in the world and i got to meet 2 of them. I felt very special. What an experience.

    It was an emotional experience being with the elephants. I felt sheer joy at being so close to the mother and child and being able to share space with the elephants. It was well organised and the staff very professional and informative.

    It was an amazing experience and the best thing that happened was i was by myself for the adventure. The guide Claire was very informative and really cool she made you enjoy the experience even more. The keepers Rob, David & Thomas were great, the way they treat the elephants. Damian the photographer caught all of my wonderful experience with Mali and Dokkon in the one on one time. What a great job. My only disappointment would have been not being able to pat Ongard as i was under the impre...
