Climb onboard our amphibious vehicle – the LARC! – and go for an exciting tour along the central Queensland coast, taking in the historical and natural wonders along the way. You’ll visit Eurimbula National Park and travel around Bustard Bay during this truly astonishing amphibious adventure!
In case you were wondering, LARC! stands for Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo vessel. The LARC was built by the US Army in the 1960s, mainly for transporting troops and equipment in and around coastal areas, so it is equally at home on land and sea. To convert our LARCs for tour use, we have put in comfortable seating, canopies, and painted them pink!
Onboard our LARC, you will travel across Round Hill Creek and along the coastline of Eurimbula National Park. As you travel around Bustard Bay your guides will provide informative commentary on the abundant local wildlife and the colourful history of the Town of 1770 – the birthplace of Queensland.
Around midmorning we stop at the northern tip of Middle Island - Jenny Lind Creek - for a scrumptious morning tea of homemade cakes and cookies, before four-wheel driving the steep climb to the historic Bustard Head Lightstation – Queensland’s first coastal lighthouse.
From here you will get spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. Your guides will take you for a tour through the head lighthouse keeper’s cottage, providing you with tales of tragedy and triumph about early lighthouse keepers and their families struggling to tame this remote island lighthouse.
Climb back onboard the LARC! for your return to Jenny Lind Creek where you will enjoy a picnic lunch with billy tea, coffee and juice in the shade or our casuarina grove.
And before returning home you’ll have the chance to experience the thrill of sandboarding down the towering dunes of Middle Island!
Please Note: You will need to bring an additional $7.00 for Bustard Head Lighthouse Association heritage management charge and entry into Eurimbula National Park.
