Enjoy a 1 day workshop that will introduce you to the fascinating process of kiln-formed glass. Apply 2 decoration techniques to your projects; a set of 4 glass coasters and a platter. Learn skills in glass cutting, mould making and kiln operation. The result is practical & totally unique!

At this one day glass slumping workshop, your artist, Marina, will welcome you with a coffee or tea and a quick tour of a working glass studio. With a vast array of completed works on display you will see the amazing scope of this art form and be truly inspired for the day’s projects.

Your workshop then begins with an overview of safety procedures and an introduction to the tools and equipment you will be using. The day is mostly hands-on punctuated with instructions and demonstrations to move you through the program which includes:

  • Suitable mould materials.
  • Patterning your glass
  • Making a mould for your platter
  • Glass cutting practice
  • Cutting your platter
  • Using the glass grinder

At 1pm we take a break and enjoy a light 3-course lunch, which will give you a chance to take it all in and to share and compare with fellow classmates in a relaxed atmosphere. Then it’s back to work!

  • Preparation of pattern for coasters
  • Making a slumping stencil
  • Loading the kiln
  • Firing programs

By the end of the day, you will have prepared a set of four patterned glass coasters and a glass platter slumped over a stencil mould.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and you will leave with a comprehensive set of class notes. The firing process takes place overnight and pieces will be ready for collection the next day either direct from the studio or at a later date from one of several locations throughout Melbourne. Alternatively you can arrange for your pieces to be mailed/couriered out (additional cost).
