2 Day Lead Rock Climbing Course

Code: AVO102
  1. Valid for 12 months
  2. Free exchange

This course is designed to develop the technical skills, experience and confidence needed to safely pursue lead rock climbing. It is perfect for intermediate climbers that are looking to move to the next level of climbing.

The course is conducted at the Wilyabrup Sea Cliffs, arguably one of Western Australia’s premier climbing locations, approximately three hours south of Perth near Margaret River. The crag offers a full range of climbing challenges and serves as an ideal environment for learning the art of protection placement (Trad Gear - camming devices, wire stoppers, hexentrics nuts and the like) which is integral to traditional lead climbing. Every piece of protection placed over the two days is critically reviewed by an experienced instructor, providing participants with constant feedback and ensuring appropriate safety is maintained throughout the course whilst you learn.

The program will cover

  • Revision of knots and top-rope belay anchor systems
  • Introduction to lead climbing equipment - it's design and application
  • Protection placement and the use of slings to minimise rope drag
  • Establishing multi-anchor belays using artificial and/or natural protection
  • Lead climbing belay systems and communication between climbers
  • Leader falls - how to fall and direction of force on the system
  • Climber safety and self rescue options discussed
  • Climbing technique and ethics
  • Environmental considerations

We have a high instructor to participant ratio of 1:4, to insure that each climber receives a lot of attention.

Important Note: The course is set an intermediate level, so you should be a confident top-rope climber with experience in establishing belay systems (utilising natural and/or man mad anchors) and belaying climbers.
